MUNDELEIN- Carried along by his putting and short game, Mundelein native Tommy Schofield finished in the top five at the Midwest Junior Players Championship. The event took place at Pine Meadow Golf Club in Mundelein. Schofield finished the competition shooting 218 on a par-72 course.

VERNON HILLS- The Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County will hold its annual fishing derby Wednesday, July 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Century Park, 290 Oakwood Road, in Vernon Hills. The event will feature fishing competitions, carnival games and awards, a picnic lunch and a visit from Ronald McDonald. Registration is required; those who wish to attend should call 847-816-4866.

WHEELING- Enjoy 18 holes of championship golf, dinner, raffles and a silent auction Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Chevy Chase Country Club, located at 1000 N. Milwaukee Ave in Wheeling. Registration and check-in begins at 11 a.m. with the participants teeing off at noon. The cost per person is $95 for the golf outing, cart and dinner; and $35 just for dinner. MUNDELEIN- The Lake County Lightning travel baseball team will hold tryouts at Carmel Catholic High School, 1 Carmel Way in Mundelein, on Saturday, Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 28. Tryout times are 10 a.m. to noon for 14 year olds; 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for 13 year olds; and 3 to 5 p.m. for 12 year olds. Players should arrive 15 to 25 minutes early, and those with questions should call 847-867-6240.

WAUKEGAN- Officials from Waukegan School District 60 will continue to accept applications through Friday, July 30 for an interim head varsity football coach at Waukegan High School. The Chicago Red Stars of Women’s Professional Soccer will host several local summer camps for girls ages 7 to 16.
MUNDELEIN – The village of Mundelein and the Mundelein Police Department will host the annual Cops ‘N’ Bobbers fishing derby for children 13 and younger.
WAUCONDA – The 2010 Prairie Division Champion Wauconda girls basketball team will host a car wash fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the Wauconda Fire District, 109 W. Liberty St., in Wauconda.
FOX LAKE – Summer basketball camps begin soon at Grant Community High School. Camps for fourth- through eighth-graders will run from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 14 through Thursday, June 17. Camps for ninth- through 12th-graders will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, June 14 through Friday, June 18; and Monday, June 21 through Friday, June 25. GRAYSLAKE – The Marian Central Hurricanes defeated the Grayslake Central Rams, 5-4, to win the IHSA Class 3A boys baseball Johnsburg Sectional on June 5 at Tiger Field.

Under the past presidential administration, we saw a program introduced called “No Child Left Behind.” The results reported were less than what was hoped. Here’s hoping that a new state program with a similar sounding name has much more spectacular results.
